This authentic Pad Thai recipe takes you straight to the streets of Bangkok's vibrant night markets. To craft this recipe, our team went to two different cooking schools in Bangkok and Chiang Mai to learn how to make pad Thai - the perfect stir fry technique and flavor balance of an authentic Pad Thai sauce. Our easy pad Thai recipe masters the delicate balance between sweet, tangy, salty, and sour that come from four classic Thai ingredients - tamarind, palm sugar, fish sauce and lime. In 35 minutes, you can feed 4 of the hungriest noodle lovers you know! We suggest adding in 2-4 eggs, some shrimp or chicken for additional protein and a few fresh mung bean sprouts or shredded carrot to complete the dish. Enjoy your favorite Thai food with our carefully crafted pad Thai recipe!

What You'll Need

Cook It Right: The Wok Setup

A wok on its own will disappoint you. These three together are what make stir fry taste like the restaurant version.

  • Craft Wok 14 inch Hand Hammered Carbon Steel Wok
Why this one: hand hammered in Guangzhou, flat bottomed so it sits on a Western hob, and light enough to actually toss. Carbon steel heats faster than cast iron and builds a black non-stick patina within a month of real use.
  • Cast Iron Wok Ring for Gas Burners
Why this one: the fifteen dollars that decides whether any of this works. A wok that rocks on the grate never gets hot enough, and this drops the pan down into the flame where it belongs. Buy it with the wok, not after you have been disappointed by the wok.
  • Stainless Steel Wok Spatula, 14.7 inch
Why this one: the curve matters. A flat spatula cannot scoop along the round wall of a wok, so food sits and steams instead of searing. The long handle also keeps your knuckles out of a pan running far hotter than anything else in your kitchen.

  • Lots of food!

I got this as a birthday gift for my mom (including tofu), and she loved it. She said it made a lot of food; she and my dad ate it for 4 meals. She added sliced carrots and other vegetables, and said it tasted great. Her praise for it made me want to order it sometime! I'm sure I will.

  • Awesome

This may be the best Pad Thai I've ever had.

  • It was okay

I did the monthly subscription and my only options were vegan (with or without tofu), so I didn't get to experience this the right way with fish sauce. The sauce was super sweet. I added in all the spice and it really didn't make it that hot. My boyfriend (who always gets Pad Thai) say this was just okay.

  • Easy and fun

I gave this to my brother and his girlfriend as a gift, and they really liked it. I don't think they would have sought out the individual ingredients by themselves (and my brother definitely had never used fish sauce before) so it was a fun and novel thing for them - and they got lots of food out of it at the end!

  • Tastes Like the Real Deal

We loved this (vegan) kit. Pad Thai is one of our favorites when eating out and now we can stay in and have as delicious a meal as in any Thai restaurant with the bonus of being able to dine in our jammies. It’s easy-peasy to make (I added egg and shredded carrots) and is so good fresh but the kicker is that it reheats well, a necessity since I cook for two and this makes a LOT of food.

  • Not a recipe for amateurs

This meal kit is not for amateurs. It's a lot harder than it looks! I have below average cooking skills (having spent probably less 100 total hours in a kitchen). Ordinarily, Takeout Kit recipes are pretty difficult to botch. It was incredibly easy for me to botch this one.

Lesson 1: when the recipe says, "soak for 20 minutes in hot water" it really means "soak for 20 minutes in water that is almost, but not quite, boiling." If your water temperature isn't hot enough, your noodles won't be soft enough. (I had to re-soften with hot water.) If your water temperature is too hot, your noodles will be soggy. (The noodles I had to re-soften.) Oops.

Lesson 2: when the recipe says, "heat Pad thai sauce on medium-low until it reaches a syrup-like consistency" it really means "heat Pad thai sauce on medium heat until thickened, stirring frequently to avoid burning, unless you want to wait a couple of hours on medium-low heat until it's done." I tried medium-low heat for 20 minutes. No syrup-like consistency here. I'm too impatient to wait more than 20 minutes for the sake of consistency. Lesson learned.

Lesson 3: if you botched lesson 1 and 2, you might as well order take-out, because when you combine your soggy noodles with your non-syrup-consistency sauce, and "fry" in your wok, you'll get Pad thai soup.

Lesson 4: when the chili pack says, "spicy! (be careful, you can always add more)" it really means "add the whole bag, unless you're allergic to flavor." If you don't add the whole bag, and you botched lessons 1-3, you'll get Pad thai sugar soup. The meal kit contains an excessive amount of palm sugar, so it either needs a little more salt or more spice.

I hope this review helps the amateur cooks out there.

I love pad thai and was very pleasantly surprised by how well this kit turned out! My mom and stepfather joined me in enjoying the meal. We all thought it was wonderful.

  • Oh, Boy!

Ok, so let me say that the flavors in this dish are really very good. I've never made Pad Thai before. I suppose I didn't get the fry time or the "splash of water" correct. The noodles didn't come out so great... just so so. I did add eggs and shrimp and those items combined with all of the other ingredients had a terrific flavor. I wound up trashing most of the noodles but, again, this was my fault in cooking with a lack of precision. I love Thai food and can make many home made Thai dishes myself that turn out delicious. Those are all rice dishes, though. Clearly, I'm better with rice than with noodles. Nice flavors... I just had difficulty with execution. :)

  • YUM!!

This kit makes a delicious meal that smells and tastes like what you’d get from a Thai restaurant. Prep and cooking were easy, but our lack of a wok is why I think a number of the noodles stuck to the pan.

Don’t fear the fish sauce! If you’ve never used this ingredient before, the strong smell will really throw you. And even if you have used it before, the strength of it in the kit might still give you pause, but rest assured everything will balance out in the end (but your kitchen may smell like fish sauce into the next day).

  • Pad Thai

This meal was easy to make, non-perishable, and came with everything I needed. I would never have been able to find these ingredients in the small mountain town where I live. Thanks for bringing me some of my favorite foods to enjoy at home!

  • Pad Thai

We had the Pad Thai last night and I must admit we both went back for seconds, we had a hard time stopping it was so delicious, we are happy to say that we still have some left since the portions are ginormas so we will be having Pad Thai lunches for a few more days... Thank You TakeoutKit...

  • Another Winner!

I was super excited to see this new dish choice. I'm a Thai food fanatic so Pad Thai was right up my alley. I added eggs and shrimp. The flavors were very authentic. I plan to order this one again.

  • Sweet, tangy, salty, and sour noodle-y goodness!

Made this last week with optional eggs. Was better than any pad thai I've had in the US! The description of "sweet, tangy, salty, and sour" was spot on. Ordering again!
